R&D Experimentation is beset with a number of challenges and issues. Those who have worked with it knows it is not as simple as it seems to be. There are basic questions like: (1) how should one really determine and set their experimental trials
for their given R&D project? (2) what is the proper number of levels for experimental variables that should be tested? (3) how could one correctly analyze and maximize the actionable insights from the experimental results? (4) how does one set-up and guard
the experimentation from biases? (5) how can I manage the number of experimental trials needed and balance that against the resources available? Of course, these questions are intertwined with the business aspect of the R&D experimentation project like the
cost/budget involved and time-to-market commercialization which makes them all the more crucial. There is no doubt we might have developed our own set of practices within the organization but is there some notion to have these practices benchmarked or perhaps
to look for alternatives from another perspective? The field of Design of Experiments (DOE) might address such notion in mind.
